Mental healthcare not good enough – Donna Lalek

Welsh Liberal Democrat candidate for Alyn and Deeside Donna Lalek has called for greater investment in mental healthcare in North Wales to reduce waiting times and give residents of Alyn and Deeside the quality care they need and deserve.

Following Time to Talk Day 2018, we are reminded of the importance of reducing the stigma around mental health and treating mental health as seriously as physical health. However, reducing stigma on its own will not be enough. Those residents of Alyn and Deeside experiencing mental ill health need investment in treatment and staffing to speed up access to vital services.

Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader candidate for Alyn and Deeside Donna Lalek said:

We all know someone who has experienced mental ill health and so we should all appreciate the importance of reducing the stigma surrounding mental health. Whilst society has made great strides in recent years in eliminating mental health stigma, we know there is more to do. We must not rest until everyone with mental health problems feels able to talk about their problems and get the help they need.

Unfortunately, mental healthcare in North Wales simply isn’t good enough. Some patients are having to wait as long as a year to receive treatment, whilst the Welsh Government has admitted that mental health services need urgent attention. North Wales needs greater investment in mental health to ensure patients are able to access treatment and get the quality care they deserve.

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have a proud record of action on mental health including increasing funding and ensuring parity of esteem between mental and physical health. If elected I will continue this great record and fight to ensure patients in Alyn and Deeside have access to high quality mental health services.
